Metroplex author submits proposal to promote sustainable development
to war-ravaged Lebanon by teaching best business practices
derived from ancient Phoenician heritage. The American University
in Beirut (AUB) Task Force on Reconstruction and Community
Service (TFRCS) is coordinating disbursement of funds from
various donors to aid in local reconstruction and relief efforts.
Dr. Habib Chamoun-Nicolás is proposing a series of
workshops to community and business leaders based upon principles
outlined in his new book, co-authored with researcher and
historian, Dr. R. D. Hazlett, entitled Negotiate Like a Phoenician.
According to Dr. Chamoun-Nicolás, "I
coined a term to describe a business practice found to be
common in a number of highly successful negotiations only
to find that the same business leveraging approach was masterfully
displayed within my own heritage by the ancient Phoenicians,
Master Traders of the Sea." Dr. Hazlett elaborates, "Everyone
knows of the celebrated gift to society by the Phoenicians
- the alphabet, but few recognize the Phoenicians for their
business model. In a hostile region where the fall of nations
was commonplace, Phoenician culture survived due to its perceived
value by business clients. Similar political conditions exist
today, and there is much wisdom to be gleaned from the past
within this historically rich culture." Dr. Chamoun-Nicolás
adds, "We think of our society as being so technologically
and intellectually advanced, but it is astounding the degree
to which ancient Phoenician business practice is relevant
today. I desire the opportunity to revive that entrepreneurial
spirit in the people of Lebanon."
